How is it already time? I feel like I just pushed out the October Polish Pickup post last weekend… but here we are again! It’s time to take a look at the Polish Pickup November 2019 Fairy Tales!

This last month was a rough one, and I took on a few less things while I got my stuff situated. Basically, my son needed me. He’s 13, and overall is more independent, but the loss of Wiggles hit him harder than I think I even anticipated. I’ve been mentally preparing him for it for awhile, but this was the kitty he’s had since he was a newborn. The one who probably plotted his death when I brought Jacob home from the hospital. So I was a little quieter on the blogging front while we healed from her loss. We’re all doing better since, but we still miss her.

I rescued her when she was a 2-3 years old and she was scared of everything, but she and I bonded immediately. When Jacob’s father would come home from work and we’d go out, she got insanely jealous and a couple times, she peed on his father’s pillow and the vet said she was associating him with bad things. When he came home, I left… so that was her retaliation. We worked on that and it stopped – but… she was my kitty through and through. Over the years she bonded with Jacob and was his shadow for the last 9 years.

I had a few setbacks happen last month, but this was the hardest blow.

This month I have 89 or 90 items to share (I’m still waiting on a couple in the mail, but not sure how many… 2 I think?) and it was a good month. I definitely had a lot of “gasp” moments when I opened up the polishes, which is a really good sign!

I did get a new light set up. It’s a bit better than the old set up, and about 10 sets of photos were done with the old, the remaining were done with the new. I see a definite difference is accuracy and it doesn’t lean as warm as it was. So thanks to Glamcor for sending an incredible set up for me to test out.

I was also happy with the theme. I’m a dreamer and a romantic, so overall – I love the idea of a ‘Happily Ever After’ but I also am realistic enough to know that things don’t always go as you want them to. I am divorced, so I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to being a dreamer. I am happy to see the mix of Fairy Tale types that makers selected – where we see the good and the bad in a sense. The darker fairy tales mixed in with the happy ones.

Inspiration:  “Godfather Death” – One of many German fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm. Known as tale number 44.

Description: No 44 is a black based jelly scattered holographic with gold to orange to pink to purple to red multichrome shimmer and copper sparks. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

All Mixed Up Lacquers | Colors of the Wind

Inspiration: Pocahontas

Description: Colors of the Wind is a sheer rose tinged beige jelly base with aurora shimmer, scattered holo, ultra chrome chameleon flakes that shift from blue to gold to green and pink to gold to green, and opal flakes that shift from orange to pink to gold and pink to purple to blue. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This is a very sheer shade, so it will show VNL. It can also work as a topper.

Alter Ego | Make A Banshee Blush (Glow In The Dark)

Inspiration:“One of my FB group mods is Irish. She grew up hearing stories about banshees and wanted the banshees to be represented in a positive light.”

Description:  Make A Banshee Blush is a pale silvery grey base with silver shimmer throughout, and it glows bright pink in the dark. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Anchor & Heart Lacquer | Mermaid Tears Base Coat

Inspiration:  Inspired by the magical fairy tales of the Nordic/Scandinavian regions

Description:  Mermaid Tears is Anchor & Heart’s deep nutrition base coat and can be in one thin coat under your favorite polish, or on it’s own as a 3 week treatment. Perfect for brittle or weak nails, or to help maintain healthy growth! Formulated with amino acids to stimulate the formation of new Keratin cells while the weak sections grow out.

Scent: Winter Berry – frosty raspberry intermingled with orange zest and warm musk.  It’s a very light, warm fruity scent. It isn’t super strong, but I do pick up the raspberry and musk most.

For these images, I used a coat of Mermaid Tears, then added silver holo glitters, stamped snowflakes with Cuticula Elaine and added another coat of Mermaid Tears on top.

Inspiration: Inspired by the magical fairy tales of the Nordic/Scandinavian regions! We picked the Swedish word “Saga” because it’s one of their words for fairy tale!

Description: My Very Own Princess is a sparkling orchid pink with a blue to green shimmery shift and rainbow micro flakes. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Baroness X | Acetone Antidote in Hänsel und Gretel

Inspiration: Hänsel und Gretel.

Description: Hänsel und Gretel scent is a gingerbread bundt cake topped with candied pears and a touch of bourbon based glaze. My nose picks up the spicy gingerbread scent first and the bite of bourbon. I don’t really detect the pears – but everyone’s nose is a bit different.

For acetone additives, you add a vial (or half… depending on preference) to 8-12 oz of polish remover. Most add it to acetone remover, but I actually add it to my purple remover which has added benefits already and this gives it a boost. You don’t have to only use acetone remover with it.

Ingredients: glycerin, jojoba oil, h2o, fragrance, polysorbate 80 (emulsifier), colorant

Inspiration:   I choose my favorite fairytale from childhood, Princess Furball. I found this story because it was is in a a book my mother gave me as a child. The book is from the 1930s and is illustrated by the wonderful Margaret Evans Price. My inspiration is a painting of Princess Furball in her fur coat from that book which I still have 30+ years later.

Cuticula | Limitless Top Coat & Mic Drop Coat Duo

Inspiration: The Little Mermaid

Description:  ‘Treasures Untold’  is the scent of sweet pineapple, acai berry, mango zest, tart passion fruit, creamy coconut milk, apples, peach, rose, yuzu zest, green apple, orchid leaves, and musky nuances. Very light and mainly tropical fruity mix. It reminds me a tropical fruit smoothie almost.

Limitless is a 5 Free Scented Quick Dry Top Coat. This quick drying formula is FREE of Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Toluene, and Formaldehyde.

Mic Drop base coat is a combination of ridge filler, strengthener, and sticky base coat. Fill in ridges, strengthen, and have a long lasting mani just in one application.

After swatchers received Mic Drop Base Coat – the supplier for this mix changed unexpectedly and there wasn’t time for Cuticula to get new bottles out to swatchers. The new formulation should be just the same, but the main difference will be that the light green tint to Mic Drop will no longer be there. It should be a milky white instead. I say ‘should’ because I haven’t seen it for myself.

Description: Licorice is a black stamping polish that also works as a one coat black polish. For these photos I used Licorice over Alter Ego Nail Enamel’s Make A Banshee Blush. I topped it with Limitless Top Coat, also from Cuticula.

Dries down with a very slight texture, but a good top coat should smooth it over, but if you use a thinner top coat, you might need 2 coats for a smooth to the touch finish.

Inspiration: Hansel & Gretel

Description: Easy Magnetic Effect was created to make it easier to get a magnetic effect from a magnetic polish. Using this will save you time and help to get the result you want. No need for rushing! Just apply the magnetic polish as a regular one and let it dry. Then apply a generous coat of this TC in one nail and use the magnet over it (repeat on the other nails). I used a black base coat and DRK Nails Dropping Pebbles as regular polish – no magnet used during application, then I used this top coat, and after each nail I used a magnet. I got nice lines from it and it was a lot less work than usual.

Fox Fire Wax & Bath Co. | Vegan Hair Oil

Inspiration: Our inspo is Rapunzel and her beautiful long hair

Description: This hair oil was created to act as a smoothing silicone-free, all-natural dry oil. It is free of parabens, formaldehydes, mineral oil, sulfates SLS & SLES and silicones. It is also vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free, and comes in recyclable packaging.

This is not scented at all.

I have thick but fine hair and it tangles fairly easily, but I also have an oily scalp so I have to be careful with oils. Vegan Hair Oil is to be sprayed into your hand, rub both hands together, then smooth over hair. If you have an oily scalp like I do, avoid going down to the root on your scalp. I’ve been using this for a week, and my hair has been smooth and easy to manage and doesn’t feel weighed down. A little goes a long way and I only spray 2 spritzes into my hand to smooth over my hair.

Ginger Fizz Boutique | Catch Me If You Can Wax

Inspiration: Once upon a time in a land far, far away there was a crushed leg, a candy cane crutch, and an evil lord… Shrek’s sidekick Gingy has been through a lot, but he is still alive and kicking (with one leg that is!) Ginger Fizz Boutique’s November contribution for Fairy Tales is Catch Me If You Can – Gingy the one-legged gingerbread man and his trusty candy cane.

Description: This cute little one-legged gingerbread man comes with his trusty little candy cane. Both the gingerbread man and the candy cane come scented in a unique gingerbread and icing scent – a freshly baked gingerbread man with nutmeg, cinnamon and freshly grated ginger topped with creamy vanilla icing. Gingy is hand painted.

This smells so good and has a Fall/Holiday vibe without being overpowering. The sweet and the spice are well balanced. The gingerbread scent is actually not powerful in this, it’s well balanced with the creamy vanilla. It’s sweet and spicy, but not overly so on either end.

I love the inspo for this because my boyfriend loves Shrek and can actually imitate any character in the movie. Gingy and Donkey being the best 2. When I showed him this wax, he yelled “NOT MY GUMDROP BUTTONS!”

His other favorite thing to say it “That’s a nice boulder!” from Donkey.

Inspiration: Disenchanment TV series by Matt Groening. A modern adult fairy tale about a drunken princess, her mischievous devil cat and Elf buddy.

Description: TO Thine Own Elf Be True is a pale apple green creme stamping polish with a chartreuse shimmer. Can also be worn as regular polish, and is a one coat polish. I stamped over Maniology Starfish.

Jior Couture | The Magic Orange Tree (Thermal & Magnetic)

Inspiration: “The Magic Orange Tree is a Haitian fairytale about a girl with a mean stepmother. The stepmother was cruel to the girl and would often withhold food from the her. One day the girl went home and found oranges on the table. Hungry, the girl ate the oranges. The stepmother grew angry and demanded to know who ate the oranges. The girl became frightened and ran into the forest. She slept there all night. When she awoke the next morning an orange seed fell from her dress. The girl sang to the seed and it began to grow. She continued signing and the tree bloomed and grew fruit. She was able to control the tree with her singing. She brought the stepmother to the tree and the greedy stepmother climbed the tree to pick all the fruit. The girl sang to the tree and it grew all the way to the clouds. The stepmother was never seen again. The girl picked the fruit from the tree and would take it to market to sell. Now able to provide for herself, she lived happily ever after.”

Description:  The Magic Orange Tree is a light green (hot) to dark green (cold) thermal, with multichrome pink to orange to gold magnetic flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos. The transition in person is a bit stronger than in my photos.

Jreine | Pixie Magic Kit

Inspiration: The Nightmare Before Christmas

Description: Pixie Magic is a burnishing powder that can be used easily without the use of Gel or a UV light. This kit comes with a 5ml bottle of Jreine’s Super Base (Burnishing Base coat), 0.30 grams by weight of Pixie Magic in Destiny, a 5 ml bottle of Royalty polish and an applicator for easier application. This .30 gram pot should give you several manicures. 

This month there is a small bottle of Royalty to use as a base included with the kit (previous months did not have this)

For my photos I used Royalty on the middle and ring fingers, and I used Baroness X Unclad on the index and pinkie (to show it over both a dark and light color)

Inspiration:  The Dark Crystal

Description: The Dark Crystal sugar scrub is inspired by this story. Like the crystal from the movie, its rich fuchsia color is warmed by the lush scent of amber. Sugar and citron combine with juicy plum notes, accented by cashmere musk for a deep and complex scent. This is a very plummy scent that’s warmed up by the musk. You have to really like plum to like this, which I do.

This has a slightly larger particle sugar in it, so it’s perfect as a full body scrub.

Lilly Anne’s Garden | Unpoisoned Apples Lotion

Inspiration: Snow White

Description: Lilly Anne’s Garden lotion is a holy grail item of mine. Each month I buy backups. If I receive it for review, I buy a backup jar and if I don’t receive to review, I buy 2 jars. I use this daily both at home and at work. It soaks into my skin easily, a little goes a long way – and it doesn’t leave me feeling greasy. I also double it up as a cuticle cream throughout the day. It’s a thick cream and the photo below of it on my cuticles is an accurate representation of how I slather it on at the end of the night. I let it sit for 10 minutes and then massage it in all over my fingers, hands and wrist area. When I’ve had a super intense swatch session, I apply some cuticle oil, then a layer of this lotion on top to “seal” the oil in and both work their magic.

Unpoisoned Apples is a tart green apple and peppermint scent. It’s an interesting combo and it’s fruity and minty… and I’m loving it. I will be buying a backup jar.

Description:  We have another lip balm duo! This month we have candy apple and peppermint! Candy Apple is a sugary sweet, candy coated apple scent and peppermint… is peppermint. I held onto the peppermint because that’s my favorite, and I always compromise with my son – and he only gets one, so he snagged Candy Apple. My son is a lip balm freak (seriously… last year for Christmas he got a stocking full of lip balms and he loved it more than a candy filled stocking)

These lip balm are smooth and moisturizing. They have a light flavor to them to match their scent, but neither are overpowering.

Description: Frozen Spell Wax is a bright wintry blend of fresh white currant, frosted juniper, fresh fallen snow and brisk winter woods scent. It’s bright and crisp, and perfect for Winter. My nose picks up a kick of crisp mint, but it’s not sharp, it’s on the mellow side. Then I get notes of woodsy type scents. It’s an interesting combo. Very unisex. Plus the wax has a fun aqua to violet shimmer.

Inspiration: My inspiration this month is Frozen, a movie about a fairytale that also helped me live my own fairy tale. Shortly after Frozen released in 2013 I left my teaching job on a quest for self discovery, much like Elsa did. On my quest, I took a job hosting kids birthday parties as Princess Anna from Frozen. As my love and appreciation for Frozen grew, so did my sense of self. My time as a Frozen Princess helped guide me to the career path I am on now, which even on my worst days feels like I am living my own personal fairy tale.

Description: The Snow Queen necklace features a delicate snowflake charm with a shifty blue to green opal center and cubic zirconia accents. Surrounding the charm are color coordinating bead drops. This necklace is 16 inches long with a 2 inch chain extender at the back.

Inspiration: This polish was inspired by the fairy tale of the same name in the book The Tales of Beedle the Bard, written by Harry Potter author JK Rowling. The story is about a trio of witches and a knight who work their way through an enchanted woods to bathe in The Fountain of Fair Fortune.

Description: Fountain Of Fair Fortune is a sheer blue jelly base packed with gold to pink multichrome shimmer and iridescent flakes that flash gold, pink, aqua blue and turquoise. Inspiration:  “Somebody has been eating my porridge!” I loved the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Goldilocks happened upon the three bears’ cottage and sat in their chairs, ate their porridge, and slept in their beds. This scrub is an ode to that story.

Description: Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey scent.  This scent is sweet and creamy just like a bowl of warm oatmeal. It’s a good unisex type scrub with small particle sugar so it’s perfect for delicate areas like your hands.

Inspiration:  Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Description:  This 8 layer, 4 oz, scoopable wax is a blend of traits of each of the dwarfs and a little bit of Snow White on top.

Scents From bottom to top:
Bashful(red with pink glitter): White tea, ginger
Sleepy(blue with yellow glitter): Lavender, honey
Sneezy(Pink with black glitter): Pepper, rosemary
Happy(Orange): orange sorbet, coconut cream, vanilla
Dopey(Lavender with green glitter): fruity cereal and milk
Grumpy(Brown): bergamot, citrus, cognac, tobacco
Doc(Green): Spearmint
Snow White(White with white glitter): orange, allspice, clove, pine

Simply scoop as much as you like into your wax warmer and enjoy the amazing aroma! I love the layer options and how this was done! They mingle well together, but you can also kind of take a little bit from the layers you want to smell.

This is a more complex scent, My favorite is Doc – which is spearmint. When I open the jar – I get a light mix of scents, but I always get a whiff of spearmint.

Polish Pickup November 2019 | Fairy Tales

We saw a lot more cool tones this month – blues, purples, greens and greys. There are other shades scattered in, but those color families definitely dominated. Flakes are a common theme this month as well!
