Summer 2016 Collection
OPI recently released the 2016 Summer Brights collection, and shortly after I received the OPI Retro Summer 2016 collection to show you. They released them back to back it seems, but I’m not one to complain about polishes releasing at all. The more the merrier in my opinion.
So above are the 6 shades in the OPI Retro Summer 2016 Collection. At first glance, nothing that hasn’t been released before – so if you’ve been around collecting polishes for awhile, these probably don’t excite you much. If you are newer to the polish craze, then you will probably really love these colors.
Formula however I was disappointed with. They weren’t impossible, but I needed 3 coats for all 6 shades. Not because of chalkiness or typical pastel issues, but surprisingly enough the issue was they were thin and slightly watery. I don’t want to repeat this on all 6 photos, so I’m going to say it here at the top. In order to not flood your cuticles, make sure you don’t pick up too much polish. You need to let each coat dry fully, or you will pull up the previous coat and cause patches to appear and see down to your nail. They are a bit tricky this time around. Considering how common some of these shades are, that did surprise me a lot. Especially knowing they have older, similar shades with better formulas.
Ok with all of that said, let’s take a look at the OPI Retro Summer 2016 Collection!
OPI Flip Flops & Crop Tops
OPI Retro Summer 2016 Collection Flip Flops & Crop Tops Swatch
OPI Flip Flops & Crop Tops is a bubblegum pink creme. This had the best formula of the 6, but I still needed 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
This shade is fairly close to Suzi Nails New Orleans from the OPI New Orleans collection that released for Spring 2016. Unfortunately though, that was a 3 coat shade as well.
OPI What’s The Double Scoop?
OPI Retro Summer 2016 Collection What’s The Double Scoop? Swatch
OPI What’s The Double Scoop is a light pink creme. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
This shade is similar to OPI Small + Cute = ♥ from the Hello Kitty Collection released in January.
OPI I’m Getting A Tan-gerine
OPI Retro Summer 2016 Collection I’m Getting A Tan-gerine Swatch
OPI I’m Getting A Tan-gerine is a slightly dusty tangerine orange creme. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
OPI SPF XXX
OPI Retro Summer 2016 Collection SPF XXX Swatch
OPI SPF XXX is a red leaning orange creme that borders on being a neon. It isn’t neon, but it’s bright and has a slightly dusty appearance. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
OPI Sailing & Nailing
OPI Retro Summer 2016 Collection Sailing & Nailing Swatch
OPI Sailing & Nailing is probably my favorite shade of blue. This is a light, but bright, blue creme. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
OPI Towel Me About It
OPI Retro Summer 2016 Collection Towel Me About It Swatch
OPI Towel Me About It is a pale yellow creme. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
Yellows are difficult for me to wear, but this one is really wearable for my skin tone and doesn’t give me lobster hands.
OPI Retro Summer 2016 Collection Overview
And there you have it, the second of the Summer 2016 collections. As I said before, the colors themselves are nice and really good picks for Summer. As far as formula though, there are other similar shades out there that aren’t this finicky to apply. If you don’t mind 3 coats and waiting for each coat to pretty much fully dry in between, then have at them. I do wish there was a lime green or something in here though to break up the orange and pink thing going on. I feel like greens are lacking a lot this year, which is odd coming from me – I barely wear greens.
My top picks for this collection are Towel Me About It and Sailing & Nailing.
Price: $10.00 Each

Bummer about the formula but I’m glad you mentioned it because your perfect swatches make me want them all!
It is a bummer! I was rather surprised since their last collection had near perfect formulas on all the cremes. They are worth grabbing if you like them, you just need some patience with them!
That’s really disappointing to hear about the formula, but the shades are pretty even if they aren’t really that unique. I’m shocked at how much I like that yellow, I usually also have issues with yellows looking off with my skin tone but I really think that one would work for me. :) I’ll have to pick it up!
The yellow is definitely worth picking up if yellows usually disagree with you. I’m cool toned and most yellows just don’t look right!
What is going on with OPI lately?
Too bad about the finicky formula – there is nothing like a pastel flooding your cuticles with chalky goodness, lol.
These colours make me super happy. Too bad that the lighter shades require three coats, though, one would expect more from OPI. But still, they’re beautiful, especially Sailing & Nailing lol!
I don’t mind three coats if it’s a polish with extras in it, to make the elements of the polish come out. For cremes? Not so much. Such a bummer, too, because they are pretty.
